Once, while travelling through Africa, I commented to my conservationist friend, Roberto, that I always felt like I was at ‘home’ when I was in Africa. “Ahh,” he said. “That’s because Africa is the antidote to civilisation.” And no example is more compelling than Segera Retreat: untouched and secluded, it’s Wilderness Safaris’ newest addition to their impressive roster, which includes the drop-dead beautiful resort of North Island in the Seychelles.
Segera is a new breed of African luxury retreat—located in the heart of Laikipia Plateau, it’s more than just a full-on safari lodge. It’s a place where you can retreat to kindle a romance, to explore, to relax, and to renew old friendships. Here, you can rejuvenate mind, body and soul, and check out the ‘big five’ and some fascinating conservation projects at the same time. It’s a ‘feel good’ place; it speaks to your soul.
There are just eight stunning, individually-styled villas, all with personalities. There’s a honeymoon-style suite with a huge round bath situated on the deck for a dip under the stars; a two bedroom house which sleeps up to five and is perfect for families; and a sprawling villa with its bedroom and living room connected by a rope swing bridge. The latter is crammed full of photographic prints and kit of the renowned wildlife photographer, Michael Poliza, a friend of the Zeitz Foundation who own the property. Of the eight elevated accommodations, each varies in its offerings—there is something for everyone here.
The Paddock House is the focal point of the property for this is where you will eat breakfast most days, have dinner on some, and quaff a few drinks on the stunning roof terrace while watching the incredible sunsets. The décor—major house envy—comprises creamy, polished concrete floors, natural stone walls and rustic bleached woods mixed with a palette of beige, grey and brown fabrics. Suffice to say, you will wish you could stay another week at least—guaranteed.
