When Oetker Collection opened Palacio Tangara in 2017, it’s fair to say that it raised the luxury hotel stakes in the city of Sao Paulo. A former mansion house set within the leafy Burle Marx Park, it is truly an urban oasis.
Just ten kilometres away from the pulsating city centre, Palacio Tangara is close enough to dip into the incredible malls, museums and restaurants as and when you wish, but it also allows you to feel far removed from the hustle and bustle of downtown. Its resort-like aura means you can easily spend the day – or days on end – here relaxing and enjoying the hotel’s leisure offerings. Take a dip, in the indoor or outdoor swimming pool, or book into the Flora Spa by Sisley, where the phyto-aromatic facials and body treatments will soon have your skin looking and feeling healthier. The spa garden, filled with ferns and palms, is a wonderful place to drift off for a snooze and find your inner zen, but if you want a workout, there’s always the fitness centre. And if you have the kids in tow, there are activities for them, too.
The style of the hotel is elegant, light and spacious, and interiors include locally sourced materials and a fabulous display of Brazilian art – mainly contemporary – a great introduction to the Sao Paulo art scene. Among the collection is a golden installation that hangs from the ceiling in the lobby that is sure to catch your eye. If you haven’t guessed, it serves as a reminder of Brazil’s gold-rush prosperity. Meanwhile, European hospitality wrapped up with Brazilian warmth is the order of the day when it comes to service – decidedly old school delivered in the most wonderful way.
One of the wow factors is without a doubt Tangara Jean-Georges restaurant, overseen by the Michelin-starred chef, Jean-George Vongerichten. The chef introduces his signature style of light Asian cooking to the menu, with an added Brazilian twist. It’s a first for South America: a hip and happening place to be, popular with residents and locals looking for a gourmet experience. There’s an exclusive Chef’s Table, an all-day dining lounge and terrace, a pool bar, a wine cellar with a vast range of wines and a chic cocktail bar – a fabulous place to enjoy dinner or a lighter bite. Once you’ve tried it, we bet you’ll be back for more.
