Editor’s note: At the time we reviewed this hotel it was called One&Only Ocean Club, but it has since become part of the Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts collection and renamed The Ocean Club, A Four Seasons Resort, Bahamas.
To say that I was excited to spend some time at the One&Only Ocean Club would be an understatement. I imagined I would have my very own James Bond moment as I swaggered through the lobby and headed to my ocean front villa.
As it turns out, I don’t really know how to swagger and my room was a Hartford Ocean View and not a villa but still, a very chic room with a stunning ocean view.
Additional accommodation wings have recently been added here (along with the aforementioned beach villas), and today this is a colonial Caribbean estate with acres of gorgeous gardens, perfect manicured lawns, meandering pathways, swaying coconut palms, and a dream of a beach with talcum powder sands and crystal clear waters.
In case that’s not enough, there are three distinctly different swimming pools and rather interestingly, a replica of Versailles’ famous tiered gardens. The new and recently renovated rooms and suites together take contemporary beach chic to new levels. There’s also a spa that offers very special treatments, so prepare to stay awhile.
Although not everything in paradise is perfect. Food at Dune by Jean-Georges Vongerichten, whilst not bad, wasn’t particularly exciting and service, although friendly and well meaning, moved at a glacial pace.
Caribbean resort prices are not for the faint-hearted and the days of constantly forgiving slow ‘we’re on beach time’ service are over. Sure, I don’t expect Middle Eastern or Indian Ocean service levels, but I also don’t expect to wait 25 minutes to be served a glass of wine.
But don’t let my small groans about service put you off in any way. One&Only Ocean Club is a stand-out whether you want a full-on beach vacation or need a short break to recharge the batteries. This hotel delivers the goods and I, for one, will be back just as soon as I can, complete with a very polished, Bond-like swagger.
