Deceptively close to the Abu Dhabi International Airport, the St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort feels for all the world like a far-off beachfront escape. One of the finest resorts on the island, the resort’s architecture is distinctly Mediterranean with a stately façade and elegant grounds leading to a pristine beach. A classy, sophisticated vibe envelopes the hotel, with a cheerful twist provided by bright bursts of colour throughout: from the verdant palm fronds to the wrought-iron chairs cushioned in brilliant yellow to the jewel-toned sea beyond.

All 376 of the guestrooms feel plush and inviting, with warm wood panelling and immaculate white linens. Contemporary artworks and intriguing decor (think glass tables held up by gnarled pieces of driftwood and bamboo cage lamps) make each room feel like an oh-so-fashionable home away from home. Each room has prompt, round-the- butler service and good-sized private balconies from which to enjoy the fresh air. Views vary; the best ones are of the sea, naturally, but looking out over the gardens or the lush golf course isn’t too shabby an alternative. Occupying the two highest floors of the resort’s west wing, the Royal Suite is positively palatial; if you’re splurging, this is the suite to choose – if it isn’t already booked by some visiting dignitary or celebrity, of course.

Breakfast at the restaurant Olea means a lavish spread of international favourites as well as traditional Arabic fare. Come back for a casual lunch or dinner and eat outdoors among the palm trees. The Southeast Asia-inspired Sontaya has a captivating dining room where interconnected pools wind around streamlined pavilions; expect a delightful array of flavours from Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia and beyond. The popular Buddha-Bar is set on the beach and is the perfect spot for an al fresco lunch or to watch the sunset. It becomes a lively affair in the evenings, complete with DJs and excellent cocktails concocted by creative mixologists.

Active guests will be pleased to find that the resort does fitness exceptionally well. The state-of-the-art St. Regis Athletic Club is enormous and incredibly well-appointed, with squash courts, spinning classes and personal trainers for those who need a little extra motivation. There’s also the legendary Saadiyat Beach Golf Club, which happens to be the first beachfront course in the Arabian Gulf. Golfer or not, make it a point to visit – the views are simply breathtaking.
