Mandarin Oriental Singapore

The Mandarin Oriental, Singapore in Marina Bay isn’t smack in the city centre – a good thing if it’s a view you’re looking for in this high-rise city. Opt for an Ocean View Room or suite on a high floor, and every time you glance out of the window you’ll have lots to look at – especially if you wake up, jet-lagged, in the middle of the night.

The hotel is an easy 30-minute transfer from Changi International Airport. It’s next door to two MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) stations, while Chinatown, Orchard Road and most of the city’s tourist attractions are a quick taxi ride away. Even better, it’s only a quick hop over to The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands (and the huge casino of 1,500 slot machines), where you’ll find many designer boutiques, including a Louis Vuitton island concept store that boasts an underwater tunnel.

The hotel is large, with 527 rooms and suites and, while the rooms could use a refresh, you’ll probably be so delighted with everything else that it won’t matter too much. Some rooms have balconies, and all are decorated in soft hues of brown and cream with a touch of green. You can make tea in your room, but Nespresso coffee machines are only available in suites and club rooms. The granite bathrooms are functional, not frivolous.

Speaking of club rooms (and suites), if you book a room with access to the elegant Oriental Club on the 19th floor you’ll have all the club services and extras at your fingertips, well worth the extra cost involved. You’ll enjoy champagne breakfasts, high tea in the afternoon and wine, beer and a full-on canapé buffet in the evenings. The help of the dedicated Club Concierge is also a perk, especially if you need someone to organize your time while you’re here.

Overall, the hotel strikes the right balance between value, service excellence, location, amenities and extras. The restaurant choices are abundant, (including an American favourite: Morton’s, The Steakhouse); the gym is modern and well equipped; the spa is superb; and the pool area is simply the best on the island – elegant with greenery all around and a poolside restaurant and bar with a gorgeous view. In the evening when the sun goes down, this is where you’ll want to be.
