  • Great central location – the minute you step outside you’re part of the city’s vibrant hustle and bustle straight away
  • Close to the Petronas Towers, but views of them are only available in selected room categories including the Club Twin Towers Room
  • The hotel is in easy walking distance of key public transportation networks that get you around the city quickly
  • One of the grand dames on the Kuala Lumpur hotel scene, it’s beginning to show its age, but rooms are gradually being refurbished
Why we like it
Why we like it

The Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur has one of the best locations in the city. It’s right next to the Petronas Towers and the Kuala Lumpur City Centre shopping and entertainment complex, home to the KLCC Aquaria, Suria KLCC mall, the Petronas Philharmonic Concert Hall and a park area. The KLCC metro stop is just a short walk from the hotel, which makes it easy to explore the city – the metro is much quicker than using taxis. Some of the best attractions are the galleries and heritage sites, including the excellent Islamic Arts Museum. If you’re in Kuala Lumpur for the world-class shopping opportunities, Bukit Bintang is the best district for designer goods.

The hotel is very well maintained but rooms and suites are beginning to look a little dated. There is, however, a programme of refurbishment under way that aims to modernise the decor, furnishings and bathrooms and bring it in line with some of the more contemporary competition in the city.

For a few hours of indulgence and relaxation we suggest the afternoon tea at the hotel’s Lounge on the Park, where you can select from 60 different types of tea to accompany your finger sandwiches and sweet treats while enjoying views of the tranquil gardens. And if you think you need some R&R after your long flight, time your stay with a holistic wellness workshop led by one of the visiting specialists that run throughout the year.

The Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur is popular with business travellers and you’ll find plenty of suited business people enjoying the restaurants. The hotel doesn’t have a holiday atmosphere but as a place to spend a few days acclimatising in the ‘gateway to Malaysia’, before exploring the country further, or as a stopover before a connection further east, it is very comfortable. The central location is good if your top priority is sightseeing and the City Centre Park, virtually on the doorstep of the hotel, is a great place for a leisurely stroll or picnic. If you have kids in tow they will be made to feel very welcome, and there is a children’s wading pool as well as tennis sessions available.
