Hôtel Plaza Athénée is anything but subtle. For over a century, the hotel has been the very definition of Parisien opulence, dazzlingly over-the-top in the best of ways. Balconies overflowing with carnations boast some of the city’s most romantic views, and the air is perfumed with Dior. Staggeringly large chandeliers hang over dining rooms that are luxurious to the point of looking otherworldly. The only thing as dramatic as the hotel’s appearance is its history: over the years it has played host to innumerable celebrities (and celebrity romances), made appearances in Sex in the City and even served as the backdrop for the arrest of Mata Hari – one of history’s most captivating spies.
Located on the iconic Avenue Montaigne – one of the Paris’ most prestigious fashion streets – the hotel’s signature red awnings make an impression from the get-go. Interiors are a decadent combination of Art Deco influence, contemporary chic and Louis XVI-inspired design. Rooms are unfailingly gorgeous; many bear that same classic elegance, while others have a more contemporary (but equally luxe) vibe. All are resplendent with beautiful fabrics, large windows and spa-like bathrooms. Even inward-facing views are magnificent – ivy climbs the walls of a rather stunning courtyard, all above those trademark red awnings – but for the quintessential experience, book one of the rooms with postcard-worthy views of the Eiffel Tower.
There’s no shortage of options for food and drink within the hotel. The glamorously futuristic Alain Ducasse au Plaza Athénée has no fewer than three Michelin stars and serves haute cuisine that is second to none. Have a charming brasserie-style meal in the 1930s-esque Le Relais Plaza, afternoon tea (accompanied by the hotel’s resident harpist, no less) in the elegant La Galerie or a romantic lunch in La Cour Jardin which, in the winter months, transforms into a fairy-tale ice skating rink.
The Dior Institut Spa is every bit as showy as the name would suggest, and while it does not have a pool, it offers a staggering number of beauty treatments for seemingly every rejuvenating need one could possibly have. Not to stop at the expected, the spa offers an ever-changing “couture treatment of the month” which is always an innovative and indulgent experience. if you’ve ever wanted to have your skin exfoliated with precious gemstones, for example, you’ve come to the right place.
