You may never have considered the Dominican Republic as a destination, but wizen-up, there’s a lot here to love. Especially here at the relaxed and luxurious Relais & Châteaux resort, the Eden Roc at Cap Cana. There’s so much to enjoy: gourmet restaurants, massages on the beach, a wellness centre and a Jack Nicklaus signature championship golf course are all in situ; no need to leave this sanctuary, guaranteed.
Punta Cana itself is a tourist-packed venue, but on this side of the island you’ll feel a world away from all that, although you’re only ten miles or so from Punta Cana International Airport; transfers to and fro included.
If it’s complete privacy you’re after (honeymooners or not), then one of the four newly-launched Ocean Villas may be for you. And yet, they are so large that you may feel compelled to bring family or friends which would defeat the purpose, somehow. So, you may wish to opt for one of the other 60-odd rooms or suites, each of which comes with its own pool, private garden, strip of beach and golf buggy, enabling you to zip around here and there on a whim.
Furnishings are stunning, with pops of colour (one per suite) like yellow, green, pink or blue. All the mod cons are included: Nespresso machines, an extra shower outdoors and an iPad to control everything within – except the kids, should you have any. And if you do, those under 3 stay free. Those a little older will enjoy the Koko Kids’ Club (for 4 to 12 year-olds) and, something to note, up to two children (14 years and under) are entitled to free lunch throughout their stay. Breakfast for everyone (of every age) is included in the rates, and you won’t want to miss it.
The meal is served in the Blue Bar and Grill with its open kitchen, also open for lunch and dinner. And for more formal fare, the Mediterraneo serves dinner in an elegant environment. The venue also has a superb wine cellar, open for tastings. If it’s a nightcap you’re after, head to the Riva Bar. Service is exemplary across the board.
When it comes to activities, there are a lot. The lovely grounds surround a man-made lagoon, and there’s a Beach Club with butlers and a kid’s pool, an infinity pool, a spa and a fitness and wellness centre.
