For over a century, the Belmond Hotel Splendido has been a favourite of the most glamorous visitors to the beautiful village of Portofino. The former sixteenth-century monastery is rightly considered amongst the most beautiful and refined of Italian Grande Dames, commanding heartbreakingly beautiful views over the Tigullian Gulf from its hillside perch.
There’s an effortless sense of style at the Hotel Splendido. Perhaps the only concession towards pomp and vanity are the small, black and white photographs of history’s famous guests decorating the public spaces. Rather, it revels in a charming simplicity, allowing the beautiful surroundings to be properly appreciated. The seventy rooms and suites (the vast majority of which enjoy the astounding sea view; pity the handful that don’t) feature similar subtlety, with the occasional splash of gold, blue or turquoise to add a well-placed touch of frivolity.
Beyond the gorgeous views, the surrounding gardens offer plenty of activities: a beautiful saltwater infinity pool, a tennis court (professional coaching available), and a well-equipped wellness centre and spa, along with easy access to nearby Golf Club Rapallo’s eighteen hole golf course. And that’s before venturing into beautiful Portofino, just a five minute walk away, or even quicker with the complimentary shuttle to the sister hotel, Belmond Splendido Mare, which enjoys a fantastic position right on the town’s legendary Piazzetta.
Connections to the heart of town are advantageous, as there’s only one restaurant at the Belmond Splendido, albeit an excellent one: La Terrazza. Serving exquisite, classic Italian and regional specialities under Chef Corrado Corti’s watchful eye, dining on the terrace with the whole of Portofino beneath you, or in the elegant dining room, is a real treat, especially when followed by an aperitif with live music accompaniment in the Piano Bar. But the old adage goes that variety is the spice of life, so having easy access to the Belmond Splendido Mare’s wonderful seafood restaurant, Chuflay, is fortuitous.
The bounty of activities offer plenty for families, and young guests are welcomed warmly with bathrobes and slippers. Family-focused highlights include gelato tasting at Belmond Splendido Mare’s Gelateria San Giorgio, and pizza classes. Even pets are welcome here; pampered furry visitors receive monogrammed robes, special menus and even spa packages, meaning every member of the family will be spoiled at this legendary hotel.
