You’d be forgiven for thinking that Belmond Hotel Caruso is suspended in a heavenly realm, somewhere between the sea and the sky. Set into the cliff edge, around 350 metres above sea level and over tiered groves of lemons and olive vines, it’s your private balcony over the Mediterranean.
Belmond Hotel Caruso was originally built in the 11th century by a wealthy family, shipwrecked on their journey to Constantinople. Today, it boasts all the worldly luxuries anyone could desire. Vibrant frescoed salons sit next to stone vaults adorned with arches and chandeliers. Marbled hallways lead to rooms brimming with antiques and paintings by old masters. There is something interesting to discover at every turn.
Rooms have been lovingly restored to their ancient Neapolitan glory. Expect handcrafted terracotta floors and Naples-yellow walls adorned with neo-classical antiques. Fresh flowers and stunning coastline vistas complete the experience.
There is plenty to do here including joining the head gardener for a tour of the gardens that have been 100 years in the making. A meander down the rose arbour leads to the stunning infinity pool that looks like it drops straight into the blue sea beyond. Meanwhile, shopaholics will enjoy the in-house boutique. Later, liberate mind, body and soul at the wellness centre – the signature Ritual of Happiness is a popular choice and includes a foot bath, body exfoliation and al fresco massage. For keep fit enthusiasts, there’s the gym that boasts beautiful sea views.
If you’d prefer to venture out into Ravello spend an afternoon wandering the lush lemon terraces, take a helicopter flight over the Amalfi Coast, hire the hotel’s traditional wooden boat, Ercole, for a trip to Positano, or drive to the Roman site of Pompeii.
Come evening, enjoy a meal at Belvedere Restaurant where traditional Italian dishes are given a modern flair. Each creation uses world-class local produce. Cap off the night at the atmospheric Cocktail and Piano Bar for a glass of local prosecco – it’s the destination of choice for Amalfi Coast nightlife.
