The stretch of Caribbean coastline known as the Riviera Maya is often hailed for its beautiful beaches, but there’s more to this part of the Yucatán Peninsula than just sand and surf. Where beach blends with jungle – surrounded by a utopia of lagoons and canals – you’ll find the Andaz Mayakoba Resort: stylish, vibrant, and enticingly secluded from the world beyond its gates.

An enormous skylight above a tranquil pool in the domed lobby (called “The Sanctuary”) sets the tone for the resort. Indeed, everything about it feels open, encouraging you to enjoy the warmth, light and surrounding natural beauty – whether you’re indoors or out.

The traditional Mayan art-inspired rooms are bright and cheery; strategic pops of colour in the accents keep it playful without feeling gaudy. You’re in a tropical paradise, with a lagoon or the Caribbean waters right outside your window. Rooms have walk-in rain showers and Nespresso coffee makers; all accommodations have private terraces and suites have plunge pools.

The paths surrounding the resort beg to be explored, on foot or on the resort’s complimentary bikes. Navigate the waterways on your own with a canoe, jetski, or paddleboard or let a guide show you around with a complimentary private boat tour. On the resort’s Eco Cruise. you’ll explore Mayakoba’s beautiful waters – and learn a thing or two about them while you do.

If minimal-effort transportation is more your cup of tea, the hotel has an abundance of golf carts, to be used off the course, or on, at the El Camaléon Golf Club.

After rolling out of bed, head to the resort’s Cocina Milagro for a buffet breakfast. Casa Amate – designed to look like the inside of a Mexican home – serves Latin-American meals and a regionally-inspired Sunday Brunch. The newly-added Sotavento offers Mediterranean in a casual environment – have a fresh seafood dish while keeping your feet in the sand. Watch the sunset (drink in hand) from OllaCeviche Bar – they have an impressive tequila and mezcal collection.
