Tenerife, the largest and most popular of the Canary Islands, also has the most luxurious hotels, the finest restaurants and the richest cultural programme in the archipelago. But its most outstanding single feature is the soaring volcanic Mount Teide, the highest point in Spain, streaked with lava where it rises into the clouds. What a contrast, then, to the sub-tropical world that exists down at sea level, 3,718 metres down below, peppered with golden- and black-sand beaches around the island’s sunniest southern corner, and with select places to stay and eat carefully distributed along the western and northern coasts.
