Monaco is, at first glance, a dense and unlovely agglomeration of high-rises. But look again and there are pockets of beauty. The jewel-box opera house designed by Charles Garnier, who built the opera house in Paris, attracts world-class singers (Roberto Alagna, Cecilia Bartoli, Joseph Calleja), who love it for its intimacy. It is also home to an innovative ballet company. Then there’s the wedding-cake casino, the majestic Hotel d’Angleterre, not to mention the supercars parked outside them. (No surprise that there’s a museum of classic cars, Monaco Top Cars Collection, on Terrasses de Fontvieille.) There’s also the little Japanese Garden on Avenue Princess Grace, the Princess Grace Rose Garden in Fontvieille Park and, for a swim, the beach.
