Courchevel started very small: its origin lay in a little drag-lift, started in 1945, which climbed a slope above the cheese-making village of Saint-Bon. Now it is very big. Nowhere else in the world can offer more and better skiing – though other resorts linked into the same Trois Vallées ski domain in the French Alps can at least claim parity. Over time Courchevel has grown and split, amoeba-like, into four villages, varying in price and style. In recent name changes glamorous Courchevel 1850 became plain ‘Courchevel’, though as the haunt of film stars, oligarchs and the entire Beckham family it was never plain. When France introduced a ‘Palace’ rating for hotels, above five-stars, three Courchevel properties received the award. Only Paris got more.
