Egypt is one of the great cradles of civilisation, home to some of the world’s most iconic and recognisable monuments, as well as locations that etch themselves so deeply into the imagination that you dream of seeing them for real. A visit to Egypt to see incredible sites such as the Pyramids and the River Nile is truly unforgettable, but there is also much more to enjoy, from bustling modern metropolises and beach resorts to rich culture and mouthwatering regional cuisine.

If you’re interested in history and culture, you will be absolutely spoiled in Egypt. Ghiza is home to the mighty and majestic Great Pyramid of Khufu, the last remnant of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It was the tallest building in the world for 3,800 years and watches over its smaller siblings and their enigmatic guardian, the Sphinx. Nearby, Cairo’s museums house incredible artefacts spanning more than five millennia of history. From there, head up the Nile to Luxor. Here the tombs of the pharaohs sit in the Valley of the Kings, across the river from the incredible temple complex of Karnak, and the ruins of the storied city of Thebes.

Egypt has plenty of natural wonders as well. The Nile Valley and its floodplains were essential to the survival of the ancient kingdoms, and the river continues to be an important aspect of life in Egypt today. Cruise along the river like a pharaoh of old and take in the sights and bounty of the longest river in Africa. For a complete change of scenery, desert safaris into the Sahara are epic journeys, whether on camel or by car.

If all this sounds a bit too Indiana Jones, fear not. There are plenty of places to enjoy yourself in modern surroundings. The shores of the Red Sea are known as the Egyptian Riviera, which is where you’ll find chic beach resorts, a gorgeous coastline and bountiful coral seas perfect for diving. Cities such as Hurghada have sprung up, as if from nothing, and are swiftly becoming the face of modern Egypt. With beautiful weather – it’s warm all year round – dramatic scenery, hip nightlife and a budding foodie scene, Egypt is a great idea, especially for winter sun.
