Los Angeles is a fascinating city where the pace is fast and the style is glitzy. It’s vast, too, so don’t expect to get to places easily on foot, or to do everything in one trip. Simply choose a few things that you’d like to do and enjoy. From the high-end shopping and restaurants in Beverly Hills to celebrity-spotting at the pulsating clubs and stylish rooftop bars of Downtown LA, and from Hollywood’s movie heritage to the beautiful swathes of golden beach, Los Angeles has lots to offer and an infectious energy to go with it.

Live like a local
Must-do
Get a sense of how sprawling Los Angeles really is from Griffith Observatory (highlighted in the film La La Land), where you can enjoy spectacular city views that are particularly beautiful at night. During your LA trip you’re bound to get sidetracked by the city’s celebrity culture and film heritage. Embrace it with a visit to Hollywood – although it’s a real tourist magnet, there’s something about spotting the name of your favourite actor on those famous little stars set into the sidewalk of the Walk of Fame. Want more? Take a studio tour of Warner Brothers, Universal Studios or Paramount Pictures to bring some of your best-loved films to life.

You’ll be spoilt for choice with museums and art galleries but the Museum of Contemporary Art is one of the best. For music, the historic Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts stages outstanding performances, or try a Philharmonic Orchestra concert at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. For a little bit of local Beverly Hills history, visit the gardens of Greystone Mansion. Once the home of Virginia Robinson, it hosted colourful characters including Elvis, Fred Astaire and Charlie Chaplin, but do note that the mansion itself is only opened for special events.

If you like to horse ride, take a guided ride through Griffith Park up towards the Hollywood sign for views back down over the city. If you’re after something more energetic, try biking in the Hollywood Hills or the hiking trails in Malibu Creek State Park. Meanwhile, whales frequent the ocean year-round and whale-watching trips are a star attraction especially in winter, which is the best time for sightings. For a bird’s-eye-view of the city there are helicopter tours over Downtown Los Angeles or along the coast to be enjoyed. Taking to the skies at sunset is a very memorable experience.
