The business class market on this, the ‘kangaroo route’, is a busy and highly competitive one. Premium travellers to Sydney have significant choices when it comes to airlines, routes and the packages on offer and so being ‘average’ just doesn’t cut the ice.
Etihad Airways, a prime player in this market, continues to evolve its business class product and the Business Studio is the latest to be introduced in that evolutionary process. Designed from the ‘ground up’ for the airline’s flagship A380 and B787 Dreamliner aircraft, it provides an exclusive, private space for guests to relax or work.
And that’s easy for passengers to do here. The seating environment is spacious, and the fully-flat bed is very comfortable. But a soft seat that reclines into a cosy bed is a given these days onboard any airline. What differentiates a good carrier from the rest is the in-flight service, the food and beverage choices, and the entertainment offerings.
Etihad’s Business Studio offering is anything but average. It’s well thought out, innovative and it couples good ‘hardware’ with very personalised and professional service. But not everything in Etihad’s world is aviation nirvana. The airline’s much-touted food and beverage offerings didn’t quite live up to the marketing hype. And at least two of its competitors on the London/Sydney route have better in-flight entertainment offerings.
Overall, however, Etihad’s business class offering (particularly on board the A380) is impressive. Quality and innovation shine through.
